Trauma Loop Installation Synapse

This installation work is a visual investigation into the physical and psychological effects that trauma can have on human bodies. In this work I have used mark making through line, form, space and surfaces that can metaphorically and visually allude to the experiences of people who have encountered shocking situations or events.
The brain creates new neural pathways in response to memories of a traumatic event. This results in an ever increasing experience of intense emotions and feelings; repetitively experienced….replay, rewind, replay.
It is the reframing of what has occurred and the personal interpretation of the event that leads a victim to experience a more intrinsic response, often felt more powerfully than what actually happened. It is this response that impacts on and affects the body both psychologically and physically.
My use of the organic material is sympathetic to the idea of fragility and tension within the installation work. These conflicting states I view as evocative of the susceptibility and vulnerability of the human body to physical and emotional violence and its embodiment of the tensions created by such acts.
